Protocols have been put in place to protect Duterte while not restricting his operations
Following President Rodrigo Duterte’s scheduled visit to areas devastated by Typhoon Odette last month, Malacanang announced on Wednesday that it is taking the required steps to enforce strict Covid-19 procedures.
The Palace is exploring methods to preserve Duterte’s health and safety without limiting his activities, according to Acting Presidential Spokesperson Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles.
“While ensuring his safety and health, we do not want to restrict his movements, especially if he wants to return to the areas affected by Typhoon Odette, gaya ng sinabi niya kagabi, bumisita muli sa mga naapektuhan ng Typhoon Odette, and yung ibang activities na gusto rin gawin ni Pangulo,” he said in
He claimed that the Palace had previously taken into account Duterte’s desire to meet with people in the locations he visits.
“He’s recognized for being a very active president who wants to be on the ground and with people all the time.” So, in order for him to effectively rule as our chief executive, we’re putting in place the essential protocols to safeguard him but, as far as possible, not limiting what he wants to accomplish,” he added.
He claimed the Palace is now “planning” Duterte’s itinerary for the coming days.
In a recent public address, Duterte stated that he intends to visit the areas affected by Typhoon Odette.
Duterte traveled to Maasin, Leyte; Inabanga, Bohol; Argao, Cebu; and Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental, Dinagat Islands, and Siargao Island last month to meet with local leaders and personally distribute humanitarian aid to individuals displaced by the hurricane.
Visitors who seek to meet with Duterte must submit a negative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) before being allowed inside the Palace, Malacanang said on December 30.
As part of their second screening, visitors and guests must submit to antigen testing within the Palace, according to Nograles.
Nograles explained, “This is part of the Palace’s health and safety procedure.”
According to the Department of Health, RT-PCR testing is still the gold standard for finding the virus that causes Covid-19 (DOH).
The Department of Health recorded 5,434 new Covid-19 infections on Tuesday, increasing the total number of cases in the country to 2,861,119.
The Department of Health recorded a positive rate of 26.5 percent out of 25,704 tests, much exceeding the World Health Organization’s 5 percent threshold (WHO).
The number of people who recovered grew by 611, bringing the total to 2,779,706, while deaths jumped to 51,604 as 18 people died of respiratory disease.
Until January 15, Metro Manila and the provinces of Bulacan, Cavite, and Rizal are under a tighter Alert Level 3.
