A House committee has approved a measure to establish a geriatric health institution
The tax component of the bill to establish a National Center for Geriatric Health and Research Institute was approved by a House of Representatives subcommittee on Monday (NCGHRI).
The House Committee on Ways and Means adopted the replacement measure, which would create specialized medical facilities and geriatric specialist centers across the country, in an online hearing.
The NCGHRI would be required to construct, manage, equip, and maintain an integrated medical institution specialized in geriatric health care, according to House Committee on Health Chairperson and Quezon Rep. Angelina Tan.
Geriatric medicine is a field of medicine that focuses on the prevention and treatment of illnesses and impairments in the elderly.
The committee also agreed to include Section 12-A in the replacement bill’s tax provision, which would exclude the NCGHRI from donor’s tax on all gifts, endowments, contributions, grants, and bequests.
In addition, the NCGHRI would be free from income tax and customs duties.
House Bills 485, 604, 958, 3949, 7101, 7169, 8739, and 8799 were merged into the replacement bill.
The bill’s sponsor, Speaker Lord Allan Velasco, claims that specialist geriatric care would reduce the average duration of stay in the hospital for old patients from 7.3 to 6.7 days, reduce hospital expenses to approximately PHP50,000 per patient, and enhance overall care for senior people.
A hospital specialized in elderly care, according to Velasco, may assist address the Philippines’ chronic lack of geriatricians by serving as a teaching ground for physicians interested in pursuing a career in geriatric medicine.
It will also help to promote geriatric health as a legitimate area of study, as well as encourage new and aspiring physicians to pursue careers as geriatricians.
“This law aims to make the country’s commitment to universal health care more truly felt by the older population, and to provide our almost 10 million senior people with the excellent treatment they deserve,” he added.
