The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) believes that once the country’s population is protected from the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), the economy will be fully reopened.

“PCCI hopes for full economic openness even if the herd immunity criterion is not reached owing to the unattainable goal of 50 to 100 percent population inoculation,” the country’s biggest business organization said in a statement last September 7, 2021.

Acting PCCI president Edgardo Lacson applauded the government’s decision to deploy granular lockdowns in Metro Manila rather than broader community quarantine measures.

The granular lockdown, according to Lacson, now eliminates the distinction between vital and non-essential economic activity.

He said, “It is a tacit acknowledgment by authorities that they would no longer use the intermittent and damaging regional lockdown policy.”

Lacson, on the other hand, argued that any kind of lockdown, whether regional or granular, is disruptive and a deterrent to company activities.

“Many health professionals believe that achieving herd immunity is unachievable since the virus is always evolving and the vaccine is always behind the curve… The Covid-19 virus and its variations will be here for a long time, but they can be controlled by simply following the health procedures of masking, handwashing, and social distancing,” he added.

The PCCI head also emphasized the need of accelerating immunization operations throughout the country in order to accomplish population protection and prevent repeat lockdowns.

“We need to get rid of our exaggerated dread of this virus, as well as our much larger fear of another lockdown,” he added.

As of September 5, the government has given out 35.8 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine.
