The Commission on Elections (Comelec) met on Wednesday with a seven-member panel to discuss the appeal of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) to reopen the period for filing certificates of candidacy (COCs).

The Commission en banc was able to address the issue, according to Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez, but no decision has been made.

“The en banc postponed a decision on the petition seeking a reopening of the COC filing period. The matter is expected to be settled next week, with all of the petition’s arguments addressed in detail,” he added in a statement.

On the other hand, Jimenez stated that the Coalition for Life and Democracy’s appeal to postpone the May 2022 elections was not discussed.

“The appeal to postpone the elections has yet to be heard.” “It’s possible that the subject may be scheduled for next week’s en banc,” he continued.

The PDP-Laban faction led by Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi filed a petition with the poll commission on December 31 asking for the COC filing time to be reopened and the ballot printing to be postponed.

According to the political party, the deadline for submitting COCs should have been 9 January 2022 at the earliest, and 7 February and 24 March 2022 at the latest, for candidates for national and local offices, respectively.

Before beginning the printing of official ballots, which is expected to begin on January 15, the party would prefer the poll commission to address all pending matters of hopefuls in the May 2022 elections.

Due to the possibility of coronavirus sickness 2019, the Coalition for Life and Democracy petitioned the Comelec to postpone the May 2022 elections (Covid-19).

The organization renewed its appeal to the poll body on Tuesday, urging it to act on its petition immediately.
