9.5K ‘Odette’-affected families will receive P487 million in cash assistance from the National Housing Authority.

The National Housing Authority has already given a total of PHP487 million in “urgent” cash assistance to 97,500 people in various regions hit by Typhoon Odette (NHA).

According to the initial assessment of the housing sector as of January 5, Secretary Eduardo del Rosario, head of the Department of Human Settlement and Urban Development (DHSUD), there were 406,521 partially and 181,258 completely destroyed houses from various areas, according to the Laging Handa briefing on Thursday.

The houses that were destroyed were in Muslim Mindanao’s Mimaropa, Western Visayas, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Davao, Soccsksargen, Caraga, and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (BARMM).

Del Rosario said the government has donated 5,598 shelter-grade tarpaulin sheets to evacuees in Cebu, Bohol, Southern Leyte, and Caraga Region, in collaboration with the US Agency for International Development and the International Organization for Migration.

“In typhoon-hit areas, we partnered with the Philippine Coast Guard to distribute 14,000 extra shelter-grade tarpaulin sheets, 250 modular tents for evacuation centers, and 1,310 solar lamps,” he added.

GI sheets, timber, plywood, tarps, nails, and carpentry tools were also provided to the Caraga Region, while 300 additional comparable kits were distributed in Southern Leyte.

Del Rosario revealed that the International Organization for Migration will purchase 8,000 more shelter repair kits for the provinces of Southern Leyte, Surigao del Norte, and Dinagat.

The DHSUD also assists typhoon victims with relief efforts.

Del Rosario added that the Pag-IBIG Fund, DHSUD’s main shelter agency, also provides PHP5 billion in calamity loan assistance to its typhoon-affected members, with 80% of their membership savings being used.

This offer’s loan repayment time will be prolonged up to three years, with a cheaper monthly amortization.

“So malaking tulong ito para sa formal sector, iyong mga empleyado sa gobyerno o empleyado sa mga private sector na miyembro ng Pag-IBIG (So it would be a huge help for our formal sector, those government and private sector employees who are Pag-IBIG members) so they can apply for Calamity Loan and get 80 percent of their savings with

Local government units may use the DHSUD’s previously pledged aid to obtain construction materials and repair severely damaged houses.
