In Manila and Cebu, there will be no public Masses for the feast of Sto. Nino.
On January 16, there will be no public Masses in Manila or Cebu to commemorate the Feast of Sto. Nino.
The Sto. Nino Parish in Pandacan, Manila, was the most recent to announce the cancellation of in-person Holy Mass on the feast day.
The parish stated the decision not to perform a public Eucharistic celebration was inspired by an increase in the number of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases in the country, particularly in the National Capital Region, according to a report by Church-run Radio Veritas on Saturday (NCR).
“We would like to advise all parishioners, devotees, and believers of Santo Nino of Pandacan that our church will be closed for the public celebration of the Holy Mass on the feast of January 16, 2022,” it said.
The church also requested the faithful’s patience, stating that the decision was made for the majority’s good and safety, particularly given the current health condition.
The church stated, “This move is for our health and to prevent infection with the danger posed by Covid-19 as a result of the potential entrance of many worshippers.”
The Archdiocesan Shrine of Santo Nino in Tondo had previously announced that it would be closed to the public on the day of the festival for the same reason, putting the health of the devotees first.
Similarly, the Basilica Minore del Santo Nino de Cebu has announced that no public Holy Mass will be held on January 16.
“Due to the continued threat of Covid-19, we are only able to celebrate the Fiesta Senor 2022 online.” “Masses are not physically celebrated,” the Basilica declared in a statement.
This year, as the Sto. Nino in Cebu celebrates its 457th feast, the celebration will be streamed live online, with the goal of reaching out to more devotees not only in the Philippines but throughout the world.
Devotees have been invited to watch internet live-streaming of the Holy Masses on the feast day and to pray that they would be able to resume their regular devotional practices in the coming years.
