According to an infectious disease expert, as new Covid-19 cases continue to develop, there is a high risk of local transmission of the Omicron variant.

Due to significant alterations, the Omicron form could be three to five times more transmissible than the Delta variant, according to Dr. Rontgene Solante of the Vaccine Expert Panel.

According to experts, an increase in the number of cases indicates enhanced virus transmission and the possibility of mutations.

“Sa scenario natin ngayon (In our current position), I would say there is already community transmission of the Omicron variety,” Solante stated during a televised public briefing.

On Saturday, the country saw 26,458 new instances of Covid-19, bringing the total number of active cases to 102,017, the highest number since Oct. 9, 2021.

There are 94,007 mild cases, 2,842 moderate cases, 3,399 asymptomatic patients, 1,462 severe cases, and 307 critical cases among the active cases.

Beverly Ho, Director of the Department of Health’s Health Promotion Bureau, said the country’s experts “assume community transmission even if it is not officially recognized by the World Health Organization and validated by genome sequencing” in a Viber message to reporters.

Being infected with the Omicron type and recovering from it does not offer lifetime protection from Covid-19, according to Solante.

“We know that if you’ve been infected with Omicron variation and recovered, you still retain an antibody, which is why you’re protected from reinfection with Omicron variant.” “You can always have Covid-19 as long as there is a mutation, community transmission,” he stated.
