COMELEC is verifying the authenticity of the ‘hacking’ report.
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is investigating accusations that one of its systems has been hacked.
“With no independent verification that a hack has occurred, one thing immediately stands out: the article alleges that the hackers were able to ‘download files that included, among other things, usernames and PINS (personal identification numbers) of vote-counting machines,” Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said in a statement late Monday, referring to a newspaper report about the alleged hacking.
“However, such information does not yet exist in Comelec systems simply because the configuration files – which include usernames and PINs – have not yet been finalized.”
However, Jimenez stated that the report’s truth must be verified.
“This calls into question the hacking claim’s validity.” Regarding the rest of the charges, please note that, although stating that the authors had “confirmed that there was an ongoing hack,” the article provides little evidence to back up its claims. Indeed, the article provides no confirmation of such verification,” he continued.
He also informed the public that the polling organization was fully compliant with the Data Privacy Act and that it would continue to work with the National Privacy Commission.
Simultaneously, Jimenez requested the writers to elaborate on their claims, especially the “verification” they claim to have conducted.
“Because ‘news’ like this could jeopardize the election’s credibility,” he warned, “the Comelec remains ready to seek all legal remedies against individuals who, either intentionally or unintentionally, undermine the electoral process’s integrity.”
He promised that the polling organization will keep working to verify the claims made in the report.
