No Filipinos were injured in the volcanic eruption in Tonga, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed Wednesday that no Filipinos have been injured as a result of the dramatic eruption of an undersea volcano in Tonga.
The volcano, which is located between the islands of Hunga Tonga and Hunga Ha’apai, erupted on Saturday, causing tsunamis and wave alerts around the world.
“As of 18 January,” the DFA said in a statement, “the Philippine Embassy in Wellington has received no reports of casualties or injuries in the Filipino community in Tonga and Samoa.”
The Association of Filipinos in Tonga Inc. informed the Embassy that “every Filipino person in the Kingdom of Tonga has been accounted for and there are currently no casualties.”
Meanwhile, the internet and international phones are still unavailable in the country.
Nonetheless, the Embassy continues to use its emergency satellite phone to try to reach Filipinos in Tonga.
According to the DFA, it may take two weeks for the Pacific island country’s communications grid to be fully restored.
“The Philippine Embassy in Wellington, on behalf of the Department of Foreign Affairs, will continue to closely monitor the situation in Tonga to ensure the continued safety of our kababayans,” it added.
According to the Department of Foreign Affairs, there are at least 87 Filipinos in Tonga, 300 in Samoa, and 400 in Fiji.
The tremendous volcanic explosion was heard as far away as Alaska, according to the United Nations, and the tsunami created by the blast swamped coasts in Japan and the United States, killing two people in Peru. It did say, though, that it is still “too early” to estimate the damage.
“So yet, no official communication has been established with two small low-lying islands Mango and Fonoi in Tonga,” it added in a January 17 report, “but surveillance flights by New Zealand and Australia have showed considerable damage along western beaches.”
