The National Capital Region (NCR) is “ready” to de-escalate to Alert Level 2 if the government decides to do so by February, according to Health Secretary Francisco Duque III.

Duque rated the NCR’s vaccine coverage as “excellent” in a televised public briefing, adding the administration is sure that individuals will adhere to the basic public health norms.

According to data from the National Covid-19 Vaccination Dashboard, the NCR has administered a total of 21,473,675 vaccine doses as of January 23, the most of any region.

As of January 23, the Philippines had administered 123,365,808 vaccine doses since the vaccination began in March of last year.

The major responses to stopping the pandemic, according to Duque, are continuing immunization and the deployment of health protocols.

Even though the region is currently on Alert Level 3 until January 31, Duque said that while indoor capacity for establishments is 30 percent and outdoor capacity is 50 percent, both capacities could be increased to 60 percent and 80 percent, respectively, if senior citizens and people with comorbidities are vaccinated at a rate of 70 percent and businesses have the Safety Seal.

“Baka pag-usapan ‘yan kung pwede nang magbaba to Alert Level 2 pero (We might debate this if we can de-escalate to Alert Level 2 but) it is not yet set in stone since the metrics will need to be reviewed,” he said.

He said that NCR’s Covid-19 cases may have peaked because the number of new infections is declining.
