Over portions of PH, the new LPA might result in flooding and landslides.
The low-pressure area (LPA) that emerged this weekend inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) might cause flash floods and landslides in the Visayas and Mindanao.
Chris Perez of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Monday that the LPA is still over waters east of Mindanao, but that it may move closer to landmass and deliver rain, which might cause flash floods and landslides.
According to satellite photos, the LPA’s clouds are becoming more structured and compressed as the weather system moves closer to its center.
“However, the LPA is still unlikely to develop into a tropical cyclone,” he added.
According to Perez, the LPA may approach close Mindanao before dissipating or crossing the island.
According to PAGASA, the LPA was 185 kilometers east of Hinatuan municipality in Caraga, Surigao del Sur province, as of 10 a.m. Monday.
The LPA is expected to bring mild to moderate rain to Northern Mindanao, Davao, Caraga, the Visayas, Sorsogon, Masbate, and Ticao Island in Bicol over the next 24 hours, according to the meteorological bureau.
“Scattered flooding and rain-induced landslides are expected under these conditions,” it added, “particularly in places that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards as identified in hazard maps and in areas with large antecedent rainfall.”
The LPA has a “low likelihood” of developing into a tropical cyclone in the next 24 to 48 hours, according to PAGASA.
