According to the Bureau of Immigration (BI), 1,320 foreigners were prevented from entering the Philippines last year because their presence was detrimental to national security.

Chinese nationals led the list with 450, followed by 261 Vietnamese, 159 Americans, 33 British, and 24 Israelis, according to Port Operations Division chief Carlos Capulong, who used the most recent data.

Six hundred and seventy-six people were turned away because they lacked the financial means to support themselves in the country and their reasons for being there were dubious, while 501 were found to be illegally documented.

Meanwhile, 69 people have turned away due to being on a blacklist, while the others were denied access for a variety of reasons.

The number of foreign nationals intercepted last year was fewer than the almost 3,000 foreign nationals intercepted in 2020.

According to Capulong, the reduction was expected given the travel limitations in place for the entire year of 2021, which led to a smaller number of arriving passengers.

Meanwhile, BI Commissioner Jaime Morente promised that the country’s borders would be strictly guarded against undesirable aliens.

“Despite the pandemic’s hardships, our frontline officers will continue to ensure that only those foreigners who are eligible are permitted access into the nation,” Morente added.
