As elections approach, 88 police officers will act as an augmentation force in the province, patrolling national routes and conducting random border crossings.

Col. Richmond Tadina, director of the Pangasinan Police Provincial Office (PPPO), said the officers had completed field training programs in the Ilocos Region.

“There are towns that have risen in population as a result of the last census, therefore this is one of the considerations to provide manpower to these places,” he said on Thursday in a virtual conference held by the Philippine Information Agency.

Apart from three places of acute concern due to occurrences in the previous elections, Tadina said 17 additional localities are also considered regions of risk in the May 9 votes.

“An increased police force will be required in certain locations to ensure a calm and secure election,” he added.

Meanwhile, on February 8, the PPPO and the Commission on Elections will begin removing illegal election posters of national candidates.

Earlier this month, the province reshuffled 59 staff and 11 police heads in preparation for the May national and municipal elections.

In a subsequent interview, Tadina explained, “They were rotated in different places to remove the influence of the police personnel in the particular areas.”
