At the House of Representatives, a bill granting greater benefits to Filipino centenarians failed to pass the third reading.

The chamber approved House Bill 10647 with 193 affirmative votes, zero negative votes, and no abstentions at Monday’s plenary session.

The bill proposes changes to Republic Act 10868, often known as the Centenarians Act of 2016, which was enacted in 2016.

On their 101st birthday, those who attain the age of 101 would get a financial present of PHP1 million, as well as a letter of congratulations from the President, according to the bill.

The current amount awarded to Filipino centenarians under the statute is PHP100,000.

Representative Manuel Zubiri of Bukidnon, one of the bill’s writers, said that because few Filipinos survive to be 100, the law’s advantages are only available to a select few.

According to Zubiri, the bill aims to extend the law’s scope to include Filipino octogenarians and nonagenarians.

“This bill intends to expand the coverage of Republic Act No. 10868 to include those Filipinos who have reached the age of 80 and 90 years old, in order to offer our beloved senior seniors with the drive to live longer as well as the resources to purchase medicines and other requirements,” he stated.

All Filipinos who reach the ages of 80, 85, 90, and 95 would get PHP25,000 and a letter of congratulations from the President, according to the bill.

The National Commission on Senior Citizens will be in charge of the implementation.

The yearly General Appropriations Act will provide funding for the implementation.
