In a ceremony attended by US Vice President Kamala Harris, Xiomara Castro was sworn in as Honduras’ first female president on Thursday. Harris later met with Castro to discuss immigration and other concerns between the two countries.

“Our connection with Honduras is critical,” Harris stated on Twitter ahead of his trip to the Central American country.

Castro, 62, assumed office after a resounding victory in a November election. She is the wife of former President Manuel Zelaya, who was deposed in a coup 12 years ago.

“It’s been twelve years of battle and opposition. “Today is the first day of the people’s government,” she declared.

During her campaign, the former first lady spoke out against the country’s administrative systems being compromised by corruption and organized crime. In a country with profound conservative origins, she has also presented a progressive agenda and pledged to decriminalize abortion in some situations.

However, even before assuming office, Castro faced a serious issue when several freshly elected members of her left-wing Libre party chose their own congressional leader, opposing Castro’s nomination. The move sparked uproar in Congress, with many questioning whether she would be able to manage the country.

Meanwhile, President Joe Biden has asked Harris to manage US immigration strategy in the Northern Triangle, which includes Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador in Central America. The vice president has stated repeatedly that her goal is to address migration’s root causes in the nations of origin.

Undocumented migrants in record numbers are pouring at the border, many of them from Honduras, fleeing poverty, corruption, and gang violence.
