According to a UN report, 562 minors recruited by Houthi rebels were murdered in fighting in Yemen last year.

In the period between January and May 2021, 562 youngsters aged 10 to 17 died on the battlefield, according to a report published by UN specialists.

“Children as young as seven years old were taught to clean weapons and avoid missiles in one camp,” the experts wrote in a report delivered to the UN Security Council on Saturday.

In Yemen in 2020, 1,406 minors recruited by the Houthis were also murdered on the battlefield, according to the research.

The UN experts accused all parties to the Yemeni conflict of breaking international law, citing Yemen’s inadequate judicial system as a contributing factor.

The Houthi party has not responded to the report.

Since 2014, when Iran-aligned Houthi rebels controlled much of the nation, including the capital Sanaa, Yemen has been immersed in violence and chaos.

According to UN estimates, a Saudi-led coalition aimed at restoring Yemen’s government has exacerbated the situation, resulting in one of the world’s worst man-made humanitarian crises, with nearly 80% of the population, or about 30 million people, in need of humanitarian assistance and protection, and more than 13 million in danger of starvation.
