DTI provides approximately P12 million in relief to NegOr fire and typhoon victims.

DUMAGUETE CITY — Through its Pangkabuhayan sa Pagbangon at Ginhawa (DTI-PPG) program, the Department of Trade and Industry in Negros Oriental has distributed livelihood kits worth more than PHP12 million to fire and typhoon victims in the province.

Nimfa Virtucio, provincial director of the DTI-Negros Oriental, told the Philippine News Agency on Saturday that her office has been distributing these kits for the past few weeks, with the most recent recipients receiving the “enterprise kits” on Friday.

The eight recipients were victims of recent fires in the capital city’s Barangays Looc and Cadawinon, as well as neighbouring Valencia town’s Barangay Palinpinon.

According to Virtucio, they each received PHP8,000 in financial assistance in the form of a voucher that they can use to buy goods from DTI-accredited businesses.

“The DTI-PPG initiative is still going well in Negros Oriental, with over 1,500 people who were impacted by Typhoon Odette last December receiving livelihood aid of PHP8,000 each,” she added.

Victims from Tayasan, Ayungon, La Libertad, Jimalalud, Guihulngan, Mabinay, Basay, Bayawan City, Bindoy, Pamplona, Bais City, and Manjuyod received business aid.

The DTI-PPG initiative helps micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) damaged by fire, floods, typhoons, and even insurgency, according to Virtucio, and the assistance is based on their current livelihood or commercial interests.

Before getting the livelihood support, the beneficiaries must attend an enterprise development and values formation seminar in order to better equip themselves in reviving their firms.

During the distribution of the livelihood vouchers, Virtucio complimented the recipients, stating that MSMEs represent the “backbone” of the country’s economy.
