According to Adobe Digital Insights (ADI) data released on Friday, online sales in the United States reached USD5.1 billion on Thanksgiving Day, falling short of expectations.

On Thanksgiving Day, the digital market research firm predicted online sales of USD5.1-USD5.9 billion.

While this year’s e-commerce statistic was similar to the previous year’s, online expenditure was up nearly 21% from Thanksgiving Day in 2019.

The lower-than-expected online sales could be due to global supply chain challenges and American shoppers starting their Christmas shopping early this year, which begins on November 1 and ends on New Year’s Eve.

However, according to ADI, e-commerce spending is on course to surpass USD200 billion for the first time in history this season, reaching USD207 billion.

According to ADI, internet sales for Black Friday are expected to reach a new high of USD9.5 billion.

According to ADI’s research, Cyber Monday, which began in 2005 to encourage customers to shop online, is expected to generate USD11.3 billion in a single day.
