Sheriff Abas, Chairperson of the Commission on Elections (Comelec), said one of the “milestones” he achieved as an officer of the poll agency in the last six years was the effective holding of mid-term elections in 2019.

This comes three months before the national and municipal elections on May 9, 2022, when Abas, along with Commissioners Rowena Guanzon and Antonio Kho Jr., departed on Wednesday.

“Of course, with the en banc, one of the highlights of my tenure will be the successful holding of the 2019 national and local elections.” Aside from the quick announcement of the winners. “We’ve also had no election-related violence and no election failures across the country,” he stated during his retirement ceremony at the Sofitel hotel in Pasay City.

In 2015, President Benigno Simeon Aquino III appointed Abas as a Comelec commissioner for the first time. President Rodrigo Roa Duterte selected him to lead the Commission two years later.

As expressions of the Comelec’s utmost admiration and thanks, the departing officials were each presented with Philippine and Comelec flags, the Book of Decisions, a gavel, shingle, pen, button, and robe.

A frame of their official portrait as Commission officials were also given to them as a memento.

Commissioners Socorro Inting, Marlon Casquejo, Aimee Ferolino, and Rey Bulay were among the other members of the Commission en banc who attended the ceremony.

Because Inting is a senior official, he will serve as the poll body’s acting chairperson until Duterte picks Abas’ successor.

Guanzon, who has a strained relationship with Ferolino over the alleged delay in the announcement of the resolution in the Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. disqualification charges, said she is leaving with a grateful heart.

“I retire today at midnight with a grateful heart for your continuous support of the Commission on Elections and the country.” Guanzon remarked, “I resign with a grateful heart because I know you have kept me in your prayers whenever there has been a difficult period and whenever the Commission has been through any crisis.”

“So, I leave knowing that I have made my parents proud, that I have enjoyed all of your company, even when we differed, and that, in the end, you will remember me not only for my colorful personality but also for what we have shared together.” She continued, “I look forward to seeing you again in the next chapter of my life.”

Apart from making choices, Kho said he will miss the opportunity to travel around the country while working at the Comelec.

“Aside from writing decisions, there are so many aspects about working at Comelec that I will miss,” he added. “I especially enjoyed visiting different parts of the country.”

Kho stated that leaving Comelec would be difficult for him, which gave him a sense of accomplishment.

“I can’t deny that I’ve felt melancholy during the last several days.” It’s difficult to say goodbye to a place that has provided me with so much satisfaction…and, of course, working in Comelec has taught me an abundance of good actions,” he remarked.

In 2018, Duterte appointed Kho to fill the vacancy left by Abas.

Duterte also appointed the four remaining commissioners.
