DA-Region 6 keeps an eye on online pork vendors.

The Western Visayas Department of Agriculture (DA-6) is keeping an eye on internet dealers to make sure their pork products are clear of African swine disease (ASF).

Dr. Jonic Natividad, the DA 6’s regulatory division chief, and the ASF Task Force’s focal person said on Friday that they were able to track down an online seller of bagnet, chicharon, and Vigan longganisa, among other items, who had purchased them from an impacted area.

“I’ll refer this to the city’s ASF Task Force.” This one is based in the Alta Tierra region of Chile (a village in Iloilo City). “Vigan is still plagued by ASF in Ilocos Sur,” Natividad stated in an interview.

He went on to say that the seller was most likely able to get the things for a lower price.

Despite the tremendous effort to keep the region free of ASF, Natividad remarked that there are still unscrupulous internet vendors who continue to get products from ASF-affected provinces, which is why they also examine the chat rooms of online selling groups.

Mayor Jerry P. Treas signed Executive Order No. 99 in October 2019 to place a temporary ban on live pigs, hot carcasses, pork, and its by-products in ASF-affected areas.

Livestock carriers and hog vans traveling from ASF zones are also forbidden from entering if they do not have a disinfection certificate from their point of origin or port of exit, according to Executive Order No. 9 signed by the mayor on Jan. 26, 2021.

Meanwhile, a Ceres bus from Metro Manila was intercepted on January 31 at the animal control checkpoint in Caticlan Jetty Port in Aklan, hauling many boxes of various pork-based goods supplied from Batangas, according to Natividad.

“It has been chastised. We’ll file a complaint with their headquarters because they’ve been informed,” he said.

An ordinance in Aklan prohibits the importation of pork and by-products from ASF-affected areas.

He said that their quarantine office was unable to keep track of all shipments since, in addition to public transportation, private vehicles convey illegal goods.

“We can’t do this on our own,” he added, “therefore we need to educate the people.”

To defend its PHP20 billion hog sector, Western Visayas has waged a huge battle to keep the region free of ASF.
