For children aged 5 to 11, a parental consent is required: Año
Secretary of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Eduardo Año said on Sunday that he fully supports the decision of some local government unit (LGU) chiefs to only allow vaccination of children aged 5 to 11 years old with their parents’ or guardians’ approval.
“Before any child is given the Covid (coronavirus disease 2019) vaccination, the parental agreement is required,” he stated.
The approval of the parents whose children will be vaccinated, according to Año, is something that should be done.
Año made this remark after Quezon City Mayor Josefina “Joy” Belmonte, Valenzuela City Mayor Rexlon “Rex” Gatchalian, Malabon City Mayor Antolin “Lenlen” Oreta III, and Navotas City Mayor Tobias “Toby” Tiangco all issued the condition separately, despite vaccine czar Carlito Galvez Jr. reassuring the public that the vaccines were
The four mayors justified their decision by claiming that they owe a duty to their constituents to advise and safeguard them.
This coming February 7, youngsters from 5 to 11 years old will be vaccinated.
Around 167,000 children have signed up to receive the vaccine, according to Galvez.
The government plans to vaccinate 15.5 million youngsters between the ages of 5 and 11.
Galvez previously stated that vaccination for children in this age group will restore a feeling of normalcy in their lives and allow the government to fulfill its goal of providing increased safety to all Filipino families.
The Philippine Food and Drug Administration has only approved the Pfizer vaccine for use in children aged 5 to 11.
When compared to older age groups, the formulation for this age group is less potent.
The Philippine government purchased 30 million doses of the reformulated Pfizer vaccinations, with 7.5 million arriving in the first quarter and another 7.5 million arriving in the second quarter, according to Galvez.
The Philippine Heart Center, National Children’s Hospital, Philippine Children’s Medical Center, FilOil Gym in San Juan City, Manila Zoo, and SM North Edsa are among the first immunization locations identified in Metro Manila.
Galvez expressed confidence that the rollout would not be hampered by a petition filed in Quezon City on Thursday by two parents seeking a temporary restraining order to prevent children from being vaccinated.
“We can’t get to the new normal without the vaccination,” he said, adding, “so nakikita namin na it (the vaccine rollout) will continue.”
Last October, the Philippines began a pediatric immunization program for children aged 12 to 17.
Over 9.1 million people in this age range had gotten at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine as of February 3.
