A food company improves its community support programs.

As the country grapples with the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic, food manufacturer Universal Robina Corp. (URC) has increased its community support, particularly in the areas of livelihood, sustainable farming, food availability, and security.

“Alongside the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, our company is developing a sustainability plan.” This encompasses “ethical sourcing, manufacturing, consumption, and community development to improve livelihood,” according to Laurent Levan, URC’s senior vice president of corporate development and external affairs.

The URC Agro-Industrial Group has launched the Kabalikat Village Hub, where anyone may start a company by running a “hub” where a neighborhood can go for food.

URC provides a wide range of premium-quality items to these hubs, including fresh meats and eggs, processed meats, and even pet care.

These hubs, in turn, provide homes with a source of income. They also supply things that may be ordered online and delivered fast to the areas around them. Everyone’s health risks are reduced as a result.

The company’s Flour Division teamed with the GMA Kapuso Foundation for its Bike for Good program late last year.

Several families who were nominated to be new community sellers received bicycles as well as Baker John bread company start-up packages.

Project Salig, part of URC’s Sugar and Renewables Division (SURE), intends to assist sugar cane farmers in Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, Batangas, Iloilo, and Cagayan Valley with their needs and concerns.

Planters can get help with everything from land preparation to planting to harvesting through this program.

Providing fertilizer, cane hauling trucks, tractor services, and other farm equipment needs; giving seminars on excellent agricultural methods; dispersing high-yield variety cane points in the dispersal program; and establishing sugar cane nurseries in mill sites are just a few examples.

URC works with the government to give farmers with high-quality seeds, training, and access to research to help them boost their yields. This has helped them get by during food supply chain disruptions and ensured a steady supply of potatoes for consumers.

It has also backed activities that promote health and environmental protection. The Gokongwei Brothers Foundation (GBF) supplied 100,000 reusable face shields to frontline health workers after URC repurposed elements of its production line.
