The Philippines has pledged P10 million to the UN’s emergency relief fund.
According to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the Philippine government will give USD200,000 (about PHP10 million) to the Central Emergency Relief Fund (CERF).
The CERF is a United Nations humanitarian fund for individuals in emergency situations that continues to be one of the fastest and most flexible funding vehicles within the international organization.
“[F]or the past 20 months, humanity has faced a catastrophe unprecedented in terms of misery, loss, and economic devastation. COVID has claimed the lives of over five million people, and the dismal reaping continues “Teodoro Locsin Jr., the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, stated.
“Hundreds of millions of people, who were already fragile before the pandemic, have been battered on all sides to the point that only a lifeline can save them. He continued, “The Central Emergency Relief Fund is truly a lifeline.”
Following Typhoon Yolanda’s devastation in 2013, the UN was among the first to respond, releasing a multimillion-dollar humanitarian aid package to assist those affected by the super typhoon.
After jihadists conquered Marawi, a conflict that forcefully displaced at least 98 percent of the city’s overall population, as well as inhabitants from adjacent municipalities, it has also displaced tens of thousands more Filipinos.
The Philippines was recently chosen as a trial for the deployment of CERF Anticipatory Action (AA) for Tropical Cyclone, with USD7.5 million set aside for possible AA activation.
According to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, 2021 will be one of the most difficult years for humanitarian organizations, but CERF has risen to the occasion.
In 2020, the fund will have aided about 69 million people, more than twice as many as the previous year.
“The magnitude of today’s problems necessitates a strong CERF with the resources necessary to meet the challenge of responding quickly when an emergency arises. Despite the generosity of donors, the USD1 billion target was not met this year. “However, it is possible if Member States allocate just a modest portion of their annual humanitarian funds to CERF,” Guterres added.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs arranged the CERF Pledging Event on December 8 to generate bigger contributions and ensure that CERF stays able to react to the growing levels and complexities of global humanitarian needs.
The ceremony also commemorated the UN General Assembly’s 15th anniversary of establishing CERF.
