According to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the Philippines has shipped an exact replica of Santo Nio de Cebu to Spain, with the Basilica de la Sagrada Familia as its first stop.

Last Sunday, the Philippine Consulate General in Barcelona presented the replica during an international mass celebrated by the Apostolic Nuncio to Spain Bernardito Cleopas Auza, a native of Bohol, and archbishop of Barcelona Cardinal José Omella in the famed Spanish church.

The original image, which is also the Philippines’ oldest sacred relic, was discovered in 1565 in what is now the Basilica Minore del Santo Nio de Cebu.

The exact replica of the Sagrada Familia was given to Cebu by the Spanish expedition, the Armada de Maluco, commanded by Ferdinand Magellan, on December 5, 500 years after it was given to Cebu by the Spanish expedition, the Armada de Maluco, led by Ferdinand Magellan.

“The arrival of the Santo Nio is truly historic. This is long overdue, and it comes at a particularly poignant time as we commemorate the 500th anniversary of (Christianity in the Philippines) “Philippe Lhuillier, the Philippine Ambassador to Spain, stated.

In the past five centuries, Archbishop Auza added, the Holy Image has always been a symbol of Philippine Catholicism, a devotion that has stood the test of time, as evidenced by the annual major feasts commemorating the image of Child Jesus held across the country.

Apart from the replica offered by the Basilica Minore del Santo Nio de Cebu, Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard Chan also donated to Barcelona another image of Child Jesus.

The National Quincentennial Committee announced on Thursday that two images of the Santo Nio de Cebu, as well as reproductions of the historic Santo Nio images of Tondo, Ternate, and Pandacan, will be displayed in churches around Catalunya.

This year’s focus of PCG Barcelona’s cultural diplomacy program is the historic return of the Santo Nio de Cebu, which is part of the city’s 2021 Quincentennial Commemorations.
