The BFAR-9 launches a humanitarian mission for the victims of the ‘Odette’ disaster in Bohol.
The Zamboanga Peninsula’s Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR-9) has initiated a three-in-one effort to help victims of Typhoon Odette in Central Visayas, particularly in the province of Bohol.
Isidro Velayo, BFAR Regional Director, said Tuesday that a total of 21 boxes weighing 620 kilograms of fresh and chilled fish were sent to Bohol under the agency’s Oplan Isda program.
On Monday, the humanitarian mission team aboard a BFAR-9 refrigerated van left here, with Velayo conducting the farewell ceremony.
The squad arrived in Bohol on Tuesday.
According to Velayo, the three-in-one mission involves Activities Plan (Oplan) Isda, Kadiwa on Wheels, and humanitarian operations.
He explained, “The program intends to build a direct relationship between producers, traders, and consumers to assure a consistent supply of affordable fish in fish-deficient areas of the country.”
He claimed the fresh and chilled fish was provided by the Zamboanga City Fresh Fish Brokers Cooperative, one of the Department of Agriculture’s “Kadiwa on Wheels” exhibitors.
The BFAR-9 refrigerated van is used to give transportation and marketing assistance to fisheries associations and cooperatives, ensuring that consumers have access to high-quality, low-cost fish.
Apart from fish, Velayo claimed the “Kadiwa on Wheels” sells a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, crops, and processed foods from Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Norte, and Zamboanga Sibugay.
The crew will also bring the second round of relief assistance for the victims of Odette, which will include 36 cartons of canned sardines from the local canning sector as well as PHP122,050 in cash from BFAR-9 personnel, according to Velayo.
Odette, which struck sections of Mindanao and the Visayas country in December 2021, wreaked havoc on the province of Bohol.
