On Tuesday, Rear Adm. Nichols Driz took command of the Philippine Fleet for the first time.

The change-of-command ceremony was led by Philippine Navy Chief Vice Admiral Adeluis Bordado at the Captain Moya Boat Landing, Naval Base Heracleo Alano in Cavite City.

Driz took over for Rear Adm. Alberto Carlos, who had been named chief of the Western Command at Puerto Princesa, Palawan.

Along with Carlos, Driz, the current commander of the Naval Education, Training, and Doctrine Command is a 1989 graduate of the Philippine Military Academy.

“I have great faith in your abilities to lead Western Command, just as you have done here at PhilFleet. “Good luck with your next and most difficult duty yet,” Bordado said Tuesday night in a statement.

“Good luck and God bless on this new and exciting chapter of your career as the new Commander, Philippine Fleet,” Bordado said.

Driz is a seasoned naval officer with a long and illustrious career behind him.

Carlos feels that his successor is a good leader who is deserving of this position, as well as an embodiment of excellence capable of significant achievements.

Carlos, on the other hand, demonstrated professional competence and energetic leadership during his time as Philippine Fleet commander, resulting in the successful completion of the command’s authorized tasks and missions.

He also assured that naval patrol, sea control, and amphibious operations were conducted on a continual basis to protect the country’s sovereignty and territorial waters from foreign aggression, intrusion, and exploitation.

Carlos’ “Mission First, Men Always” policy allowed for extraordinary improvements in operational preparedness, mission completion, facility improvements, and morale and welfare of Fleet sailors and aviators.

He also received the Distinguished Service Medal for his meritorious and valuable services as commander of the Philippine Fleet from March 29, 2021, to January 19, 2022, as well as the Presidential Security Service Ribbon for faithfully performing his duties to effectively guard and protect His Excellency, President of the Republic of the Philippines, Rodrigo Roa Duterte.
