‘Follow the MMDA’s weekday caravan prohibition,’ says PNP head to poll bets.
MANILA, Philippines โ General Dionardo Carlos, chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), advised candidates to follow campaign restrictions, particularly the Metro Manila Development Authority’s (MMDA) directive forbidding caravans from using key thoroughfares on weekdays.
On weekdays, he claimed, the scheduling arrangement will be advantageous for vehicles and commuters rushing to and from work.
“I hope that the candidates and their supporters understand that they should not be the cause of delay for the general people,” Carlos stated in a statement released late Saturday.
Carlos, on the other hand, agreed with the MMDA’s decision that campaign caravans should only be allowed in Metro Manila on weekends and holidays.
“This will be feasible because there are fewer automobiles on the roads,” he said.
He went on to say that the PNP will help in every manner it can to ensure a smooth flow of traffic for the benefit of the people.
“May we also remind them that whenever they want to organize a motorcade or caravan, they must obtain the relevant permit from the LGU (local government unit) involved,” he stated.
On February 8, candidates running for national elected offices began their 86-day campaign cycle.
There are ten candidates competing for president, and nine candidates are running for vice president.
There will be 64 senatorial candidates contesting for 12 senate seats, with 178 party-list candidates.
The campaign season for local candidates, which includes members of the House of Representatives as well as the elected province, city, and municipal authorities, begins on March 25.
