MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Justice (DOJ) has urged YouTube, a video-sharing and social media platform, to preserve material from an account referenced in a cyber libel lawsuit filed by Senator Francis Pangilinan, a vice-presidential contender.

Since May 21, 2021, the “Maharlika” account has been publishing a series of videos assaulting Pangilinan and his family, according to Pangilinan.

The Department of Justice stated that because the suspect has been identified, Pangilinan can file immediately with the National Prosecution Service, bypassing the necessity for a National Bureau of Probe investigation.

On Tuesday, DOJ Office of Cybercrime Officer-in-Charge Charito Zamora sent a text message to media saying, “We already ordered YouTube to preserve any material relevant to the subject account complained about.”

“The purpose there is to ensure that the integrity of computer data relating to the account is intact and available in the event that the complainant will pursue the case with the prosecution service,” she said, noting that one of the case’s challenges is that the suspect is based in the United States.

In her Facebook account, Maharlika, which has over 900,000 followers, the freelance female blogger identified Beverly Hills, California as a location.

She went live on Maharlika YouTube on Tuesday and challenged Pangilinan and his actress wife, Sharon Cuneta, to sue her in the United States instead.

Some commenters addressed her as “Madam Maharlika” or “Miss Maharlika.”

The YouTube account has 433,000 subscribers, while Maharlika Channel has 21,900 subscribers.

A link to the website, https://www.maharlika.news/, is also included in the accounts.
