MANILA, Philippines – UniTeam senatorial candidate Harry Roque supports the legalization of same-sex marriage because everyone has the right to love whom they want.

Roque, a human rights lawyer, said if elected, he would introduce legislation to make same-sex marriage legal for the LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual) community.

“Pabor po ako diyan dahil hindi po puwede manghimasok ang estado pagdating sa isyu kung sinong mamahalin at sinong magiging kapiling sa buhay,” Roque added.

The Supreme Court denied a plea to revisit its September 2019 decision refusing a petition to permit same-sex marriage on Jan. 6, 2020.

Roque has stated that he welcomes divorce in order to protect children from their parents’ “poor marriage.”

“Pabor din po ako dyan kasi naman pong may mga taong nagkakamali ang nagbabayad po ay ang mga anak,” he added.

The House Committee on Population and Family Relations supported a bill for final passage in August 2021, which reinstated absolute divorce as a mechanism of dissolution of marriage in the Philippines.

The unnumbered alternative bill, which would allow absolute divorce in the country, was unanimously accepted by the committee.
