The budget for QC Covid-19 hospitals will be increased by P1.3 billion

MANILA, Philippines — Several government-owned coronavirus disease (Covid-19) treatment centers in Quezon City received a total of PHP1.3 billion in additional cash this year under the 2022 national budget, according to a party-list lawmaker.

The Lung Center of the Philippines, a Covid-19 referral and treatment hospital, will receive an increase of PHP179 million, from PHP505 million last year to PHP684 million this year, according to Anakalusugan Rep. Mike Defensor.

According to Defensor, the National Kidney and Transplant Institute would receive an additional PHP300 million, bringing its total funding to PHP1.6 billion, while the Philippine Heart Center will receive an additional PHP100 million, bringing its total funding to PHP1.9 billion.

He added the East Avenue Medical Center, a Covid-19 treatment facility, will receive an extra PHP400 million, bringing its total to PHP2.6 billion, and the Quirino Memorial Medical Center, previously Labor Hospital, will receive PHP200 million, bringing its total to PHP1.3 billion.

He said the Philippine Orthopedic Center’s funding will be increased by PHP102 million, from PHP934 million to PHP1.036 billion, while the National Children’s Hospital’s funds will be increased by PHP66 million, from PHP595 million to PHP661 million.

“The additional government subsidy will enable these hospitals to provide more services and financial aid to their patients, many of whom are Quezon City residents,” he said.

In the instance of the Philippine Children’s Medical Center, he said the budget for 2022 will be cut by PHP400 million to PHP1.5 billion because the allocation for medical equipment acquisition in 2021 was a one-time appropriation.

In addition to national government-run health facilities, Defensor noted Quezon City owns multiple hospitals that serve the city’s citizens.

“In this time of the pandemic, the city should match the national government’s initiative by devoting more cash to its hospitals to accommodate more patients,” he said.
