Over 87K MT of bangus fry will be produced thanks to new hatcheries.

MANILA, Philippines — Once the 37 legally mandated hatcheries across the country are completed, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) estimates over 87,000 metric tons of Bangus (milkfish) fry to be added to the local output.

“These newly legislated hatcheries, which are expected to be finished in the first half of this year,” BFAR National Bangus Program focal person and Calabarzon Regional Director Willy Cruz said in an interview on Thursday.

In 2021, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), 446,382.19 MT of bangus fry were produced. This comprises 205,486 MT from domestic sources and 245,354 MT from Indonesian bangus fry imports.

According to BFAR data, the 37 legally mandated hatcheries around the country may generate up to 87,186 MT of bangus fry. Every year, each hatchery could produce 15,000 pieces of bangus fry.

Under 22 legislation passed during the 16th, 17th, and 18th Congresses, 37 multi-species hatcheries and aquaculture facilities must be built across the country.

According to BFAR, another 21 are currently under development and will be completed in the first part of 2022.

The hatcheries have been given a budget of PHP635 million.

“The Legislated Hatcheries Program of the DA (Department of Agriculture)-BFAR intends to meet local requirements for aquaculture seed stocks, reduce reliance on imported fry, and ultimately boost aquaculture sector productivity,” BFAR said.

The program, according to the statement, aims to expand the country’s cultivable species, encourage species diversification, and provide a platform for fisheries extension activities.

In December 2021, the first batch of the statutory hatcheries, including a multi-species marine hatchery in Perez, Quezon, was officially opened.
