MANILA, Philippines – Malacanang announced on Friday that President Rodrigo Duterte will not be personally accompanying his approved senatorial candidates in their campaigns for the May 9 elections because he has no official entries in his calendar yet.

Karlo Nograles, the President’s cabinet secretary and acting spokeswoman, said the President is currently “occupied with work.”

“Okay naman si Pangulo (The President is fine) since he is preoccupied with his work. However, there are no official entries on his official schedule to the effect of physically accompanying senatorial candidates “In a news conference, Nograles stated.

Former Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo, former Senator JV Ejercito, and former Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) Chairperson Greco Belgica have all run for senator with Duterte’s support.

Duterte has yet to support a presidential candidate in the 2019 elections.

“Let us recall what President Pangulo said in his last ‘Talk to the People’ address, and I quote: ‘At this point, I am indicating that I am not endorsing anyone unless there is a strong reason truly for me to change my mind and decide to endorse a candidate.’ So far, ganoon pa rin po ang Pangulo’s stance (the President’s stance remains unchanged) “Nograles said.
