Returning OFWs from Hong Kong are not prohibited, according to the Palace.
MANILA, Philippines — Malacanang said Tuesday that the Philippine government will not impose a travel ban on overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) returning from Hong Kong, despite the fact that the Chinese special administrative region is battling its fifth coronavirus disease epidemic of 2019 (Covid-19).
“Sinumang Pilipino, saan man sa mundo ay maaaring umuwi sa Pilipinas, wala pong ban sa Pilipinas ay maaaring umuwi sa Pilipinas, wala pong ban sa Pilipinas ay maaaring umuwi sa Pilipinas ay maaaring All Filipinos who desire to return to the Philippines are welcome to do so (All Filipinos from everywhere in the globe are welcome to return to the Philippines). There is no restriction on Filipinos returning to the Philippines) “In a press conference at the White House, acting presidential spokesperson Karlo Nograles remarked.
When asked if the government would impose a travel ban on Hong Kong, Nograles stated that no decision had been made yet, but that all OFWs should get completely vaccinated before traveling to any nation.
“Iyan po ang pinakamabisang paraan para ma-assure natin iyong kanilang full protection kapag sila po ay pumunta ng ibang bansa,” Nograles added.
“If the question is whether Filipinos travelling to Hong Kong would be banned, Iyon po ang ibig kong sabihin na wala po tayong ganiyang klaseng desisyon (If the question is whether Filipinos going to Hong Kong will be banned, Iyon po ang ibig kong sabihin na wala po tayong ganiyang klaseng desisyon). “Welcome na welcome po to any Filipinos who want to return to the Philippines,” he continued.
Raly Tejada, Philippine Consul General in Hong Kong, expressed his hope that the Philippine government would not prohibit OFWs from returning to the Philippines.
“But, of course, that is a choice I leave to our Manila specialists and superiors.” However, because of the—-also based on constraints, hindi rin po makapunta rito ang mga Filipinos (Filipinos cannot go here). In the same virtual news briefing, he remarked, “These are things that need to be assessed and discussed by our superiors in Manila.”
Nograles, on the other hand, said it would be up to the Hong Kong government to decide whether or not to prohibit flights from the Philippines to Hong Kong.
“In terms of restricting flights from the Philippines to Hong Kong, it’s entirely up to the Hong Kong government.” Nograles stated, “Wala tayong ano diyan, control diyan (We have no control over that).”
Nograles previously stated that each OFW in Hong Kong who tests positive for Covid-19 will receive cash assistance of USD200 (about PHP10,000) from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).
He added the POLO gave food, hygiene kits, and power banks to OFWs in the area right once so they could communicate while waiting for calls from the Center for Health Protection and the HK Labor Department.
