Those who break the quarantine will be prosecuted, according to the palace.
As the coronavirus outbreak continues, Malacanang promised on Friday that violators of quarantine regulations would be penalized.
Karlo Nograles, the Cabinet Secretary and acting presidential spokesperson, made the statement in response to reports that a returning Filipina from the United States had violated quarantine protocols and had tested positive for coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) days after being seen at a Makati City bar on December 23.
“Those who break the law will be prosecuted without hesitation. ‘Talagang po-prosecute’ namin (We would definitely prosecute them). (We’re not going to let this slip.) Hindi natin tatantanan ‘yan (We’re not going to let this slide.) This is a public health issue, and it must be addressed immediately “In his final Palace press briefing for 2021, Nograles declared.
Nograles emphasized the need for public health protocols for “everyone’s security and safety,” saying that quarantine violator would not go unpunished.
“Anyone who violates, the law will catch up with you. Huwag ninyo subukan (Don’t even try), please,” Nograles said.
The Criminal Inquiry and Detection Group of the Philippine National Police is one of the authorities performing the “required investigation and fact-finding,” according to Nograles.
He emphasized that it is the responsibility of everyone, whether international passengers or those in charge of establishing quarantine facilities, to ensure that the health precautions are followed.
“All potential fines, violations of the Notifiable Diseases Act, [any] violations as provided dun sa mga agreements natin sa (in our agreements with) quarantine and isolation facilities May pinirmahan naman ang mga ‘yan at alam naman po nila kung ano ‘yung mga (they have signed it and are aware of the potential punishments), “he stated
‘Omicron Girl’ is a fictional character.
The violation may have infected roughly 15 persons, according to Secretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government Eduardo Ao.
DOT-National Capital Region Officer-in-Charge Sharlene Batin identified her as Gwyneth Anne Chua in the show-cause order issued to Berjaya Makati Hotel, located along Makati Avenue in Barangay Poblacion.
Chua has been dubbed “Poblacion Girl” and “Omicron Girl” by internet users, with most comments describing her as selfish, irresponsible, and self-centered.
In a radio interview on Thursday, Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said the hotel originally covered for the girl, claiming she was isolated the entire time, but the agency obtained evidence from Chua’s fellow partygoers who swore they were with her.
The violator subsequently acknowledged skipping quarantine, according to Romulo-Puyat.
Despite the fact that the Palace has given the Department of Justice (DOJ) carte blanche in bringing cases, Secretary Menardo Guevarra said they will first turn to law enforcement and, if necessary, the courts.
