PDP-Laban to Comelec: Reset ballot printing, reopen COC filing

On Friday, the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) requested that the Commission on Elections (Comelec) postpone the printing of official ballots for the May 9, 2022 elections.

The group of Energy Secretary and party president Alfonso Cusi petitioned Comelec to reschedule the printing of ballots, which was slated for Jan. 15, 2022, because there are still unresolved cases involving individual candidates and party-list groups, according to a 20-page appeal.

The petition stated, “There are various actions ongoing before this Honorable Commission and even the Supreme Court (SC), therefore rendering the printing of ballots for the impending 2022 elections legally impossible.”

“Petitioner humbly requests that the printing of ballots for the national and municipal elections in 2022 be postponed pending the settlement of matters before this Honorable Commission and the Supreme Court.”

The organization referenced the Supreme Court’s temporary restraining orders against presidential candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and rejected party-list organizations.

The PDP-Laban petition argued that “it is legally impossible for ballots to be produced in the interim pending resolution of these cases.”

Prior to the May 2016 elections, the Comelec changed the printing schedule, according to the petitioner.

“This Honorable Commission will recall that on February 15, 2016, it ordered the printing of ballots in preparation for the 2016 national and local elections, which, like the impending 2022 national and local elections, were automated,” according to the organization.

At the same time, the PDP-Laban requested that the filing of certificates of candidacy (COC), which took place from October 1 to 8, be reopened.

The Omnibus Election Code, according to the petition, would have allowed COCs to be filed until February 7, 2022 for national posts and March 24, 2022 for municipal positions.
