More brigade combat teams are being considered by the Philippine Army.
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Army (PA) has announced intentions to expand its Brigade Combat Team (BCT) in order to respond to a variety of security challenges.
When asked how many BCTs the PA plans to build, Army spokesperson Col. Xerxes Trinidad said in a message on Friday, “The Army expects to steadily increase the number of BCTs in the medium term consistent with the prevailing and growing threat situation.”
The Army’s major combined arms and quick deployment unit is the BCT.
“It is made up of combat, combat support, and combat service support forces that carry out tasks in support of the AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines) mission,” Trinidad explained.
Currently, the PA has one BCT, dubbed “1BCT,” that was activated in December 2018 and deployed in Sulu to assist with continuing attempts to neutralize local terrorist groups.
When asked if the complement of the 1BCT is already complete, Trinidad stated that efforts are now underway to beef up the 1BCT.
He stated that this is required to improve its “operational preparedness” in order to carry out its objectives.
“The Army has pledged to improve the BCT’s manpower and capabilities in order to raise its operational preparedness in completing its missions,” Trinidad stated.
BCTs were developed in response to the PA’s demand for forces that could be quickly deployed in situations like the siege of Zamboanga City in 2013 and the struggle for Marawi City in 2017.
