PH looks forward to 2022 with a reduction of 11% in fireworks-related injuries.

The Department of Health (DOH) announced that Filipinos had a safer New Year’s Eve celebration this year, with only 85 fireworks-related injuries (FWRIs) by 6 a.m. Saturday, down 11% from 2021’s count of 96.

The total is also 75% lower than the average of 336 FWRIs during the previous five years.

However, the number of cases may increase in the coming days due to late reports and consultations),” DOH Francisco Duque III said during a press conference at the East Avenue Medical Center in Quezon City.

According to DOH data, the National Capital Region (NCR) accounts for 36% of all injuries, followed by Region 6 (Western Visayas) at 15%, and Region 1 (Ilocos Region) at 13%.

Sixty-four of the 85 cases included males aged 2 to 56, accounting for 75% of the total.

Ten instances (12%) had blast or burn injuries that required amputation, 52 cases (61%) had blast or burn injuries that did not require amputation, 25 cases (29%) had eye injuries, and other patients had various injuries.

There have been no complaints of fireworks ingestion, stray gunfire injuries, or fatalities as of yet.
