MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) warned on Friday that it will track down and pursue any attempts to mislead the current investigation into the disappearance of 31 “sabungeros” (cockfighting aficionados).

“A social media post depicting photographs of PNP SOCO (Scene of the Crime Operations) officials conducting crime scene investigation on many bodies were unearthed in an apparent attempt to undermine the inquiry,” PNP public information office commander Brig. Gen. Roderick Alba said in a statement.

The same social media post claimed the bodies were those of the missing victims supposedly discovered in Tanay, Rizal.

However, a deeper examination of the photographs revealed that they were obtained during the investigation of an ambush in Guindulungan, Maguindanao, on February 12 that claimed the lives of nine people and injured three others.

“The creator of this disinformation will be probed for his acts as well as a probable connection to the missing person investigation,” Alba stated.

The Senate’s investigation into the rising number of missing people reportedly involved in cockfighting, as well as its online equivalent, began on Thursday.

Until the results of the investigation into the issue of the missing sabungeros, lawmakers have asked the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. to suspend the licenses of e-sabong operators.
