MANILA, Philippines — According to the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), some 38 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) are now leaving Ukraine as tensions persist in the eastern European country.

“Right now, there are roughly 38 OFWs en route to the western border of Ukraine, which borders Poland, because this is the area where Russian forces have not built up a military presence.” In a radio appearance, OWWA chief Hans Leo Cacdac indicated that they will be taken to a town before crossing the border into Poland.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr., according to Cacdac, revealed that the Polish government has agreed to allow OFWs to enter the country.

Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III has also issued an order to collaborate with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and embassies in Warsaw, Poland, among others, according to him.

Other Filipinos in Kyiv, according to Cacdac, also require aid.

“There are roughly 40 people who still require assistance,” he continued, “but we have been told that transport will be provided from Kyiv to convey our OFWs to safer grounds on the Poland side of the border.”

“As far as we know,” Cacdac said when asked if the honorary consul in Kyiv is still operating.

After Russian President Vladimir Putin launched military actions in Ukraine, which began on Thursday, at least 137 people have been killed so far.
