Violators on the quarantine may be sentenced to prison under the law.

Returning passengers in the Philippines have been cautioned that breaking Covid-19 quarantine regulations could result in incarceration, according to Malacanang.

Inbound tourists and hotels should follow all quarantine rules, according to Acting Presidential Spokesperson and Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles, or face civil and criminal consequences.

“Sa (in the) Notifiable Diseases law, there’s not just a punishment, there’s also incarceration,” he remarked in an interview on ABS-CBN News Channel’s Headstart.

Violators of Republic Act (RA) No. 11332, also known as the Mandatory Reporting of Notifiable Diseases and Health Events of Public Concern Act, may be fined between PHP20,000 and PHP50,000, or imprisoned for one to six months, or both, at the discretion of the relevant court.

“If you are thinking of breaching protocols, please don’t even try because hahabulin ka talaga namin (we will chase you down), including those hotels.” You’re under contract, you have responsibilities, and you should be aware that not only legal suits, but criminal charges might be brought against you,” he continued.

He also urged the public to report suspected quarantine breakers so that they can be prosecuted “to the utmost extent of the law.”

“Kung mayroon mang nakakaalam (If you know of any offenders), please notify us as soon as possible so that we can take appropriate action,” he added.

Nograles said the accusations against a Filipino woman who allegedly broke quarantine laws after returning from the United States, as well as the Berjaya Makati Hotel, a quarantine facility in Makati City, for violating quarantine standards, would be decided by the right court.

“It’s up to the judge to decide.” I’m not saying this will be the sole case filed since it all depends on the police investigation, the [Criminal Investigation and Detection Group] investigation, and the prosecutor’s final decision in court,” he said.

“Depends on the prosecutor if there are more offenses na puwedeng i-file (that can be filed) against the lady and the establishment,” she said. Again, ayoko pangunahan, so hayaan na muna natin’yung evidence-gathering ng ating mga kapulisan at CIDG (I don’t want to preempt, so let us leave evidence-gathering to our police and CIDG),” he continued.

He promised that those who broke the law will be prosecuted.

“With those admissions and all of the evidence we’re obtaining, we’ll implement to the utmost extent of the law or the laws available, kung ano ang (whatever) relevant laws, we’ll execute them properly,” he said.

Gwyneth Anne Chua admitted to bypassing the five-day statutory quarantine due to “connections” and even attended a party in Makati City, according to Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo Puyat.

Chua tested positive for Covid-19 later on.

According to the Department of the Interior and Local Government, at least 15 of the people Chua was with at the two places had already tested positive for Covid-19.

The Berjaya Makati Hotel also stated that Chua’s actions were “a very significant breach” in the face of the Covid-19’s ongoing threat.
