According to a statement from the president’s office, France strongly condemned Russian assaults on Ukrainian civil nuclear installations on Friday and urged drafting an emergency security plan to protect nuclear sites.

France, along with its principal partners, will propose specific measures to maintain the safety and security of Ukraine’s five main nuclear sites based on IAEA technical standards in the coming hours, according to the statement.

“It is critical to ensure their safety and security,” it continued.

It includes the now-defunct Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which was the site of a 1986 accident and is now under Russian control, as well as Zaporizhzhia, which was captured on Thursday.

Ukraine has 15 reactors and three active nuclear power plants: Khmelnytskyi, Rivne, and Yuzhnoukrainsk.

President Emmanuel Macron met with IAEA Director-General Rafael Mariano Grossi, according to the Elysee, and expressed his “great worry” about the risks to nuclear safety, security, and the application of international safeguards posed by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Macron stated that Moscow must “immediately cease its illegal and dangerous military actions in order to give Ukrainian authorities full control over all nuclear facilities,” as well as “allow free, regular, and unrestricted personnel access to the facilities to ensure their continued safe operation.”

All of this comes after Russian forces launched missile attacks and took control of Europe’s largest nuclear power facility, Zaporizhzhia.

Grossi issued a statement warning that overnight fighting had put many nuclear safety and security sites in jeopardy, despite the fact that no radioactive material had been released from a fire that was afterwards doused.
