Makati is positioned as the Philippines’ Silicon Valley thanks to a public-private partnership.

MANILA – Makati City has been selected as the pilot city for the Innovative Cities program, a public-private partnership that aims to transform the country’s core business district into its own Silicon Valley.

The Innovative Cities initiative, which aims to boost the country’s innovation and technology quotient, has partnered with the Department of Trade and Industry-Board of Investments and the Resilience Innovation Sustainability and Entrepreneurship (RISE) Certification Program.

The goal of the effort is to “tech up” one city at a time to help local economies and businesses grow through innovation and technology.

“We can only collectively raise the country’s technology and innovation quotient if we localize our reaction to innovation and technology,” Digital Pilipinas convenor Amor Maclang said at the initiative’s inauguration on Thursday.

According to Maclang, the cooperation aims to modernize the 31 cities chosen by the Department of Information and Communications Technology’s Digital Cities Program (DICT).

The program’s goal is to help these cities’ digital startups develop.

“We’re excited to provide a sandbox environment to encourage entrepreneurs to develop disruptive concepts and not be scared to take chances because the DTI has regulations in place to assist them.” It’s been said that running a successful business takes a village. Fortunately, we’re enlisting the cooperation of the entire city of Makati, as well as national line agencies, to assist these enterprises,” Maclang added.

Yani de Guzman, co-founder, and CEO of investment holding company RONIN, believes that tech startups will thrive if they have adequate funding and coaching.

“What we intend to do is award them (startups) with PHP500,000 in financial assistance whenever they accomplish specific milestones, ensuring that the grant is assisting them in building a viable business, developing their structures, and establishing a sound legal framework for their businesses.” We’ll tour them around and give them the chance to sell their ideas to qualified investors,” de Guzman added.

Innovation and technology, according to DTI Undersecretary Rafelita Aldaba, also promote the country’s industrial policy.

“We see new technologies like AI, augmented reality, virtual reality, robotics, and advanced manufacturing, as well as Internet of Things, blockchain, industrial biotech, cloud computing, advanced materials, micro and nanoelectronics, satellite and cognitive technologies, as drivers to achieve an inclusive, resilient, and sustainable industrial development,” Aldaba said.
