DOH exec: PH is prepared for a probable Omicron variant wave.
The Philippines is prepared for a probable Omicron variant wave, which DOH Undersecretary Leopoldo Vega warned on Monday appears to be approaching the Philippines as Covid-19 cases continue to rise.
In an interview with ANC television, Vega, who is also the country’s treatment czar, stated, “Well, it looks like the Omicron wave is upon us.”
According to Vega, the Philippines has seen a “steady increase” in the Omicron, similar to what has happened in South Africa and Europe.
“Our numbers have doubled, and this is just the beginning; we are confident that this will reach a high.” We don’t know when it will slow down and crest. But the most important thing is that we’re ready for the omicron virus,” he explained.
The Department of Health (DOH) has reported more than 4,000 new cases per day for the past two days, including 4,600 on Sunday, the greatest number of infections since the country’s lowest total of 168 new cases on Dec. 21, 2021.
Vega noted that while the Omicron variety causes modest symptoms, its high transmissibility factor could result in a significant number of afflicted patients.
“We’re prepping our health-care systems, testing, and isolation so that we’re all ready for another ride in the waves of the Omicron virus,” he said.
He went on to say that the government is constructing temporary treatment and monitoring facilities as well (TTMFs).
“There are only about 115 TTMF beds across the country.” That implies if the Omicron grows at an exponential rate, we might have trouble isolating or quarantining these Covid-positive patients,” he said.
The Department of Health previously said that a surge or peak in Omicron infections can be avoided by using public health measures like face masks, social distance, frequent and adequate handwashing, sufficient indoor ventilation, and vaccination.
On Monday, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire reported 11 imported and three domestic instances of Omicron variant in a separate online media conference.
Nine of the 11 cases are returning overseas Filipinos, she said, adding that none of the cases had serious symptoms or resulted in death because they were either asymptomatic or had minor symptoms.
“All reported local Omicron cases have completed the requisite 10-day isolation and have been marked as recovered prior to the release of the entire genome data,” Vergeire stated.
