ISTANBUL, Turkey – In China, the daily tally of Covid-19 cases has topped 5,000, the largest single-day increase in the last two years.

China recorded 5,154 cases on Tuesday, including 1,647 “silent carriers.”

With 4,067 coronavirus cases confirmed, Jilin province in northeast China, which has a population of more than 21 million people, has been the hardest hit by the latest wave of infections. Lockdown has been imposed in the area.

According to the state-run daily Global Times, since the province faces a “difficult and complicated situation,” Zhang Li, deputy chief of the Jilin Provincial Health Commission, stated the administration will use “emergency unconventional measures” to push for a province-wide DNA test.

The cities of Changchun and Jilin are experiencing a rapid spread of illness.

With 1.4 billion people, China is seeing an unprecedented comeback of coronavirus, which is impacting 27 of the country’s 31 provinces. The first cases of the Covid-19 were recorded in December 2019.

Infections in China have reached this level for the first time since the pandemic began, prompting the government to impose a 77-day quarantine to stop the virus from spreading.

As part of the virus’s containment measures, several cities, including Shanghai and Shenzhen, have enforced stringent lockdown, compelling local and multinational manufacturing companies to close their doors.

To manage the Covid-19 patients, authorities in Jilin province erected five tent hospitals with a total capacity of 22,880 beds in Changchun and Jilin.

Around 7,000 soldiers have been summoned to help with anti-virus efforts, while 1,200 retired soldiers have “volunteered to operate in quarantine and test locations” to tackle the Covid-19 issue.

On Monday, provincial officials purchased 12 million antigen testing kits to increase their testing capability.

A number of officials were fired as a result of their failures during the recent viral outbreak.
