For safe summer travel, the PNP initiates a security plan.

MANILA, Philippines — On Wednesday, the Philippine National Police (PNP) inaugurated its “Ligtas Sumvac (Summer Vacation) 2022” campaign, which aims to provide safe travel for motorists and commuters during the Lenten season and summer months.

Due to the reopening of tourism sites and the start of events, which may attract both local and foreign tourists after a two-year break, PNP chief Gen. Dionardo Carlos expects more travelers this year.

“We are issuing an alert to all police units and stations to strictly follow our instructions in order to avoid a comeback of Covid cases and deter crime,” Carlos said in a statement.

The PNP has issued a set of operational instructions to better ensure that minimal public health requirements, as well as peace and order, are maintained, particularly in tourist destinations or places of worship, as part of this endeavor.

According to the instructions, police units and stations should begin coordinating with community-based volunteers and force multipliers so that they may be deployed anytime there is a big activity.

Carlos stated that police officers will collaborate with the Department of Tourism or their local counterparts to develop and distribute safety suggestions that may be used as tourist guides.

Regular inspections of tourist sites are also required, as is the deployment of mobile patrols and the adoption of maximum police visibility in key locations such as passenger terminals.

Each LGU’s allocated police station must additionally activate their tourist police to focus on specific complaints and take immediate action.

“We remind our restaurants and other tourist-related enterprises to follow the health routine and have their own guest monitoring system in place.” If limitations such as curfews and liquor bans are still in place in the areas where they belong, they must follow them,” Carlos explained.

Despite the loosening of protocol, he noted, everyone’s safety can only be ensured if all stakeholders work together.

Until the end of March, Metro Manila and 47 other locations across the country will be under the most relaxed Alert Level 1.

Under Alert Level 1, people of all ages and comorbidities are free to go around, but they must avoid crowded and tight locations, as well as close contact (3Cs) situations.

Private businesses and government agencies are also permitted to operate at full capacity on-site, subject to minimal public health standards.

Wearing well-fitted face masks is still required by the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF), except when eating and drinking; participating in team and individual sports in venues where ventilation standards can be maintained; and participating in outdoor sports or exercise activities where physical distance can still be observed.
