No lifting of the mask mandate has occurred thus far: Duque
MANILA, Philippines – The mandate to wear a mask remains in place even as coronavirus cases continue to decline, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III stated Thursday.
Duque cited as an example European nations Austria, Denmark, France, and Germany, which have seen an increase in coronavirus infections since repealing their mask mandates.
“Matuto tayo sa iba’t ibang karanasan ng mga bansa sa Europa na kung ano ang mask mandates, naglipana naman ang mga kaso (Let us learn from the experience of other European countries. They repealed the mask requirements and saw an increase in cases),” he explained.
Duque assured the public that the country’s experts are examining the possibility of repealing the face mask mandate and downgrading the Covid-19 risk classification to a lower alert level.
“Eh, mas gusto natin matulad sa kanila?” Therefore, ayaw natin, dahan dahan tayo (Would we like to be like them? We don’t want that, so let’s slow down) and allow data and science to guide us through our expert panel,” he said.
On Wednesday, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire stated that once the entire country is placed on Alert Level 1, further easing of movement restrictions will be discussed.
“Sa ngayon masyadong premature, masyado pang maaga, so Alert Level 1 muna tayo, malamang hanggang sa katapusan ng ating Pangulong Duterte’s termino,” Duque said.
