The recent movement of the Leyte fault line necessitates preparation: phivolcs

PALO, Leyte – PALO, Leyte – According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the recent movement of the Leyte Island fault line serves as a reminder to the public to prepare for a more powerful earthquake.

Renato Solidum, Phivolcs’ director, said on Wednesday that the magnitude 5.3 earthquake expected in Burauen, Leyte on March 21 is a follow-up to the 2017 Leyte earthquake.

“These earthquakes should serve as a reminder that we must be prepared for strong earthquakes. We don’t know whether this will be followed by major events,” Solidum said during his visit here in an interview with the media.

The Leyte Island fault line, which is divided into several segments, is part of the 1,200-kilometer-long Philippine fault zone, a major tectonic feature that runs the length of the Philippine archipelago, from northwest Luzon to southeastern Mindanao.

On July 6, 2017, a magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck Ormoc City and the nearby town of Kanaga in Leyte, killing at least four people and injuring over a hundred others.

“Burauen is located south of the epicenter in 2017, and this is the segment where we anticipated activity following the Ormoc. When a fault moves, it imparts stress on adjacent segments,” he explained.

In 2018, Phivolcs warned of a possible strong earthquake in central Leyte, citing the province’s Philippine Fault’s lack of significant shaking in over a century.
