LEGAZPI CITY, PHILIPPINES – The local government here stated on Wednesday that any procession can now be held during Holy Week celebrations.

Due to community quarantine rules, such religious activities have been prohibited for the past two years.

The municipal government’s remarkable performance in immunization and the zero coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases here in the last two weeks, according to Mayor Noel Rosal’s advice, justified the decision.

“Lenten processions in Legazpi City are allowed provided that the minimum public health standards are strictly observed,” according to the advisory, which was coordinated with the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Undersecretary Epimaco Densing and Bicol Inter-Agency Task Force chairperson lawyer Anthony Nuyda.

Rosal went on to say that Legazpi City has now met all of the conditions for Alert Level 1.

From April 10 to 16, the Roman Catholic Church observes Holy Week.

In the meantime, the Police Regional Office in Bicol (PRO-5) has stepped up its efforts to prevent any attempts to disrupt the peace ahead of the Lenten holiday, with the whole regional police force on high alert.

PRO-5 regional director Brig. Gen. Jonnel Estomo directed all police units and stations to increase patrol operations against individuals who would take advantage of the event’s solemnity.

“As part of the preparation, PRO-5 will deploy Road Safety Marshalls in high-traffic places such as bus terminals, airports, and seaports, as well as leisure areas such as motorways, main thoroughfares, and crime-prone areas,” Estomo stated in a statement.

To avoid a spike in Covid-19 instances, police help desks will be set up to aid the general public and guarantee that safety health regulations are followed.

“We guarantee the public that members of the ‘Kasurog Cops’ will stay on high alert and will be ready to provide much-needed assistance to the community during the Lenten Season celebrations,” Estomo stated.
