DUMAGUETE CITY, TEXAS — On Wednesday, the Negros Oriental Electric Cooperative I (NORECO I) guaranteed the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and the Diocese of Dumaguete’s Diocesan Electoral Board of reliable power in its service area for the May 9 national and municipal elections.

In an interview with the Philippine News Agency, NORECO I general manager Jose Juvileo Acabal said that power had been restored in 95 percent of the 285 barangays in Ayungon, Bais City, Bindoy, Canlaon City, Guihulngan City, Jimalalud, La Libertad, Mabinay, Manjuyod, Tayasan, and Vallehermoso as of March 22.

He also stated that the power company has restored 88.17 percent of power in its service area, which equates to 81,907 of the 92,901 households that were severely impacted by Typhoon Odette in December.

According to Acabal, the electric cooperative is working hard to restore power in areas where voting precincts are located.

“About ten polling precincts in Bais City are currently undergoing restoration due to washed-out poles,” he said, “but our commitment is to do this in time for the elections.”

According to Acabal, roughly 16 teams from electric cooperatives in Luzon, Visayas, and Negros Island are currently assisting in the continuing power restoration of NORECO I in the center and northern sections of Negros Oriental under the so-called Task Force Kapatid.

Typhoon Odette caused an estimated damage cost of PHP164.7 billion, according to the cooperative.
