Duterte has stated that he will resign as President in good standing.
MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte said on Friday, less than four months before his term expires, that he would leave in peace because the Philippines is now in “good” shape.
Duterte announced his readiness to step down from office on June 30 during the inauguration of the Southern Philippines Medical Center’s Cancer Diagnostic Institute and Cancer Treatment Facility buildings in his hometown of Davao City. He said his accomplishments have made him “fulfilled.”
“I am approaching the twilight of my life. I walk with a limp due to the numerous faults with the motor. Eh hindi talaga ako nadala eh (due to a slew of motor vehicle accidents. Accidents occurred as a result of my failure to learn from my mistakes). I am on my way home, God willing. “Nakita ko ang Pilipinas, okay naman,” Duterte said.
Duterte stated that it is “worth” retiring from politics if he is able to keep his promise to provide a comfortable life for Filipinos.
Additionally, he stated that the presidency strengthened his resolve to uphold peace and order, combat illegal drugs, improve health care services, initiate education reforms, and develop infrastructure, among other things.
“Ako na na-fulfilled sa lahat ng bagay. I am already fulfilled in everything. I couldn’t have asked for anything more),” he stated.
Recognizing that being the country’s President is a difficult job, Duterte stated that he did his part.
“Matanda na ako, 77 naman, ewan ko kung anong magdating sa akin pero ako, sa totoo lang, gusto ko ‘pag wala akong gagawin sa mundo, tapos naman trabaho ko (I’m already old, turning 77 years old. I’m not sure what will happen next, but I believe I’ve already accomplished my mission),” he stated. “Everything is worthwhile.”
On Monday, March 28, the President will turn 77.
The presidency has aided Duterte in becoming a “better leader,” acting Presidential Spokesperson and Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said Tuesday during a “Straight Talk” interview with the Daily Tribune.
Duterte surprised the public in November 2021 when he became a substitute Senate candidate under the Pederalismo ng Dugong Dakilang Samahan Part.
He resigned from the Senate the following month to pursue his earlier goal of retiring from government and spending more time with his family.
